If you want your party to be a success here are some useful tips for you. We know these can work - we've picked them up from our experience of good and badly organised parties we've performed at...

There are 2 sections here, one for bashes in general and then some specific wedding reception tips.

GENERAL PARTIES

Make it fancy dress - fancy dress parties are ALWAYS the best

Think of a fancy dress theme - James Bond, Vicars and Tarts, Dead Icons, Sport, Sealife to name but a few

Tell people about the party even before you start sending invites

Give plenty of notice when you send out the invites

If you are offering food, consider what to offer and how long it will take - a self-service buffet is the quickest. Have a queue at each end working towards the middle - it moves it along faster

Booze - if it's not a proper bar, get someone in to dish out the booze to avoid a free-for-all. Tell them what you want them to do i.e. keep everyone's glass full. If it's a theme night try to get them dressed accordingly.

If you are having a band, think about what happens before and after them - do they provide a disco or do you need to hire one in

Size of venue - don't put 150 people in a hall big enough for 300 it will look like nobody has come. Make the space fit the crowd - if it's a huge hall, use tables to block part of it off.

Give the band / disco enough room. Put them close to the dance floor. Obvious? Not to everyone!!

Tell the disco BEFORE THEY START to watch their volume - discos are ALWAYS too loud!

If the band is too loud then ask them straight away to turn down - it's no use telling them afterwards

Don't book a pub band because they are cheaper and expect them to know how to do a party. Pubs and dances are NOT the same!

Do the band have lighting - do they need some (if they don't have any it could be a sign they don't normally do functions)

Make sure the band/disco have easy access to their performing area so they can set up

 

WEDDINGS

Do you have a special song (particularly at a wedding) - get it on CD AND TAPE to give to the band/disco to play. It's unlikely a band can learn your special song just for your party if they don't already know it.

Get your best man in touch with the band / disco - it's his job to stage manage them on the big day

Have a master of ceremonies - they are money well spent!

Get a band that will involve your guests and do a song with the best man, bridesmaids and so on.

Try to borrow a radio mic from the band / disco so that everyone can hear the bride's father's nervously whispered speech!

With a disco - check out what music they will play and tell them your requirements - you will probably know what you are getting from the band especially if like Glam Slam they are themed, but you must make sure the disco plays music that people will enjoy dancing too.

Theme nights work very well at weddings even if only the evening guests turn up in fancy dress - it can make your reception one that will be talked about for years - check out some of our photos.

Get the band/disco to turn up early (we always do it anyway!) so that they aren't setting up while people are eating - unless it's in the same room as the afternoon reception in which case they'll just have to wait for an appropriate time.
